Pregnancy yoga for every body.

Yoga for birth for women in Banbury, Brackley and beyond

The first three months of pregnancy can hit haaaarrrd; the sickness, the nausea; the wondering when the pregnancy ‘glow’ kicks in? And all the while society expects you to keep it a secret until the magical 12 week scan, leaving you with nobody to share the ups and downs of this weird but joyful time with.

Well that is all about to change, because from 12 weeks, right up to full term you can walk into a room full of other women who are in the same boat as you.

Whether you’ve never stepped on a mat before, or you’re a seasoned yogi: you are welcome to join as soon as you’ve had your 12 week scan, right the way up to full term.

Pregnancy yoga with me combines my doula knowledge and experience creating a class to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, restore balance and improve alignment for a more comfortable pregnancy and to prepare you for birth.

Each class incorporates:

  • Check-in chat and catch up
  • Breathing practice for pregnancy and any type of birth
  • Movements that relieve common pregnancy aches and pains
  • Instinctive active birth positions
  • Optimal foetal positioning movements
  • Pelvic floor exercises to practice strengthening AND relaxing your pelvic floor
  • Guided relaxation to connect with your baby, your changing body and constantly shifting energy levels

Pelvic girdle pain? Carpal Tunnel syndrome? Reflux? All part of the joys of pregnancy, right?

Well, maybe not so much, but pretty much any condition can be accommodated so that you still get the huge benefits of being in a room with other women, going through the same things as you, sharing in the highs and the lows that come with growing a new human.

All classes are taught from my studio which is situated about 10 minutes from Banbury and Brackley and has everything you could need to enjoy a class; the moment that you walk into the studio your shoulders will drop as you feel at home.

Here, you will meet other women going through the same things as you so you can build that ‘village’ everyone tells you is so essential.

Frequently asked questions about pregnancy yoga

As soon as you have had your 12 week scan you are good to go. I recommend starting as soon as you can to build muscle memory and make the movement feel really familiar. This will make the movements feel more instinctive during labour and birth as there are huge similarities between the yoga movements and birth movements.

No! In fact I would say 90% of the women in my classes have not done any form of yoga before, so you will be with people in the same boat. The movements that we practise are simple and accessible and follow a similar pattern each week so you will soon feel confident with the movements.

Yes, absolutely! Because due dates rarely coincide with term dates I am really pleased to be able to offer a weekly booking option so that you can either fit classes around your busy schedule, or as you approach your due date. But I would always recommend booking in for as many sessions as you can at once so that you get to know the other people in the class as the weeks go by.

Pregnancy yoga is a very safe practice and in many cases can alleviate many pregnancy related conditions, but I would recommend mentioning these when booking, or discussing with me prior to booking if you have any concerns.

Yes! Yoga is a very gentle practice that is not only safe, but is really beneficial as birth prep and as a way to stay calm and relaxed during this time of huge emotional change. It is recommended that you wait until after your 12 week scan to start classes, not due to any risky practices, but simply because pregnancy before 12 weeks is a riskier time in general and therefore it is not recommended to start a ‘new’ thing.

Yoga teaches simple, effective breathing techniques combined with intuitive movement – both of which are fantastic coping techniques for birth. A 2022 study into regular pregnancy yoga practice concluded: “The evidence highlights positive effects of pregnancy yoga on anxiety, depression, perceived stress, mode of birth and duration of labour.” (Corrigan et al 2022). What’s not to love about that?!

Yes, absolutely! The movements are great practice for physiological birth, but they are also very effective for easing general pregnancy aches and pains and maintaining strength, whilst the breathing techniques are a great way to keep calm and relaxed in the lead up to your caesarean and during the birth itself, plus, meeting other mums to be is a great way to build your social circle for when the baby is here.
